One of the most prominent factors in every religion, culture and civilization is geography. The hills, rivers and in Florida’s case, the swamps, are all components of how we as people live within a giant nature. Just as a sound designers ultimate job is to make music and sound part of the world so real you don’t even notice it, geography lies behind every outlet of our society. Just by turning on the TV you can be transported to many different locations around the world. Advertising specialists expect people to have certain premonitions about locations and use that to sell products. With special effects as good as they are, any location can be artificially created so the question is, which kind of people are you advertising too and what locations will make the majority of those people feel a connection with the product?
So ask yourself, how many choices in your day have been influenced by your geography? Your decision to wear short sleeves and a baseball cap to block the sun, your cold energy drink instead of hot coffee, your hesitation to commit to any physical activity outside what so ever. So you decide to stay inside, enjoy the man made climate for a while and watch some television. Don’t feel like you’re alone, “the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day (or 28 hours/week, or 2 months of nonstop TV-watching per year)” according to A.C. Nielsen Co. Television is the largest medium for advertisement and businesses have put the time and money into discovering that.
I decided to conduct an experiment and document the different location’s products were presented in. I watched a Comedy Central standup special running 30 minutes in length. The majority of these commercials were car commercials in which different geographical locations presented their cars driving through deserts and over mountains. This makes people think that these cars are capable of anything. Obviously most people don’t live near a mountain or a desert but that doesn’t matter because of the glamor of how it looks.
